Several vendors on Pattaya beach suspended for fighting

Now that parking is allowed on both sides of Pattaya Beach Road, some vendors believe that all parking spaces near their umbrellas belong to them. Times have been so hard for Pattaya’s beach vendors, they are now literally fighting for customers.

Last weekend, three beach chair sellers were suspended for 15 days after a scuffle for customers on Beach Road, the survival ritual was captured on video and then went viral online.

Deputy Mayor Manot Nongyai said such behaviour is intolerable, showing the coastal town from its worst side just as the coastal town is trying to attract Thai tourists and foreign travellers to visit from Nov. 1.

The incident involved Thai tourists who had parked their cars on the right side of Beach Road. Beach chair vendors descended on the car and tried to get them all to rent umbrellas.

But there are 400 cars on that side of the road and not all motorists come there to make use of the beach. That has annoyed vendors who want everyone to park on the right-hand side to get onto the beach and, ideally, to their seats.

Manote warned the seat tenants that if they repeated their behaviour, their licenses would be suspended indefinitely.

The municipality of Pattaya takes the position that tourists can park anywhere along the street, even if they do not want to use the beach.
