According to the media, 54-year-old Phoon Chiu Yoke has pleaded guilty to 9 violations of national Covid19 regulations. The woman rose to fame when a video of her refusing to wear a face mask at the Marina Bay Sands resort went viral.

The video shows the woman, a retired Navy major, berating an employee who asked her to wear a mask and repeatedly demanded to see the employee’s badge.

“I told you, if you don’t have a badge, don’t talk to me. You have no right to ask me to do anything.”

Since that video clip was shared, residents of Singapore have filmed the woman without a mask on a number of times while she was in public, including at the supermarket and on the riverside Clarke Quay. Between December and June, the woman was also seen without a mask outside the State Courts, the Marina Bay Sands and the Mandarin Orchard hotel.

Phoon was first charged after refusing to wear a face mask at a nutrition centre in May last year. Following the charges, she left Singapore and flew to the UK, where she was quarantined at Marina Bay Sands the following month on her return. While there, she was accused of violating the quarantine rules after leaving her hotel room to visit the pool.
