Super variant Delta Plus rears its head in Thailand

The even faster-transmitting version of the Covid19 Delta variant, Delta Plus, was discovered in September in a 49-year-old man in Ayutthaya, the Department of Disease Control (DDC) said.

“The case was discovered in September by the military’s medical department,” said Dr Chawetsan Namwat, director of the DDC’s Department of Emergency Diseases and Health Hazards.

“The Delta Plus variant can spread more easily than its Delta counterpart. It is believed to have originated in England, where it was discovered in 6 per cent of Covid19 patients.

“In Thailand, the Delta Plus situation is still in the monitoring phase,” he added.

Meanwhile, Thailand’s overall Covid-19 situation is improving, with new infections and deaths generally declining, including in densely populated areas such as Greater Bangkok, DDC reported.

“However, we are closely monitoring areas where infections tend to increase, such as Nakhon Si Thammarat, Tak, Rayong and Chanthaburi,” he said. “These counties have recently reported new cluster cases related to funerals or other social activities where people did not wear face masks or share meals and glasses with others.”

At the start of this week, Thailand had received 70,590,025 doses of a Covid19 vaccine, with 55.5 per cent of the population receiving the first shot and 39.4 per cent the second. Bangkok is the only province where almost everyone has received their first injection, followed by Phuket, where 82.7 per cent of the population has received the first vaccine.
