Swiss tourist found dead at Ton Ao Yon waterfall in Phuket, police believe malicious intent is involved
Yesterday, the remains of a 57-year-old Swiss woman who arrived in the Phuket sandbox on July 13 were recovered at the foot of a waterfall, with police suspecting the woman had been raped and murdered.
Her body was found in the shallows about 1 kilometre inside the Ao Yon waterfall area in Wichit. Police believe she died at least 3 days before her body was discovered.
A 31-year-old resident found the body around 1.30 p.m. yesterday and filed a report with the local police. The 164-centimetre-tall woman was dressed in a pink t-shirt and jacket, with a silver coin on a necklace around her neck. Her jeans and panties were found nearby, along with black Nike shoes and a cell phone. Her body was covered with a black sheet and only her feet protruded above the surface of the water.
Phuket police quickly identified the murdered Swiss woman as her passport and ID card were also found at the crime scene. Officials have opened a full investigation and are continuing to collect evidence while her body was transported to Vachira Phuket Hospital for an autopsy.
Although Phuket police have not released the identity of the murdered woman, details about her trip to Phuket have been revealed. She arrived in Phuket on July 13 on a flight from Singapore and was travelling alone, according to an immigration police source. She had been to Phuket earlier in 2019 and had travelled to Chiang Mai where she left Thailand and flew to Singapore.
When she returned to Phuket last month, she stayed at the Dusit Thani Laguna Hotel for 2 weeks until July 27, after which she moved to the Mooring Resort Hotel. A witness said she saw the woman around 2 p.m. last Tuesday as she left her hotel in Phuket and walked towards the beach. No other details are known at this time.
