Beware

  • Mall customers flee as Power Strip catches on fire.

A big mall in Bang Phli District, Samut Prakan almost caught on fire causing customers to race to the exit. Smoke filled the mall with the source coming from a toy store. This story is a good warning to choose quality power strips with surge protectors and to not overload a power outlet. The incident was shared by a Facebook page named Here is Bang Phli in Thai on 12 December 2019.

A picture was attached in the post showing the melted power strip and the remains of the fire that started to melt the cords. Smoke slowly started inside the toy store before it spread throughout the floor. Shop vendors and customers in the mall noticed the smoke and feared for a fire before rushing to the nearest exit. Luckily the store staff and the mall’s security guards put out the fire in time with fire extinguishers before the flames caught onto something else.

The Sanook News Team went to the mall and discovered that the store with the source of the fire was locked up with metal chains. The security guards blocked off any media from entering or taking any footage near the toy store. The main cause of the fire is estimated to be an electrical fire from multiple power strips and extension cords. One of the power strips might’ve not had a surge protector and power overloaded in one of the cords that were too small or low quality.

This incident is a good reminder that power strips are an extremely important product that needs to have certain quality guidelines when purchasing. Power strips can be bought in Thailand at prices as low as 20 THB. When taken apart, the low priced power strips reveal that they are made with 2 thin wires or metal bars inside that is expected to supply power to multiple electrical devices. On your next power strip purchase make sure to look for ones with surge protectors or at least one that has been approved by the TISI logo (Thai Industrial Standards Institute).

  • Drivers beware, Dashcam explodes

A Facebook user from Rayong Province shared the story of how his dashcam exploded in the truck. His girlfriend was using the car to work when she came back and saw a fire in her truck. The owner of this story decided to come to share the story online as a warning for other drivers as dashcams are almost a necessity on today’s roads.

A picture was attached with the post showing a white truck with the remains after the dashcam exploded. The dashcam he was using was purchased 3 years and 4 months ago, A, the owner of the car stated that he had never heard of other dash cams exploding so he never thought of removing the dashcam out of the car when it was not in use.

On the day of the incident, A’s girlfriend drove the truck to work as usual at 13.00. She left one of the car windows open to let the air in. When she returned at 16.00 the girlfriend realized that there was smoke coming out from the window. She didn’t know what to do and was in shock but luckily a security officer drove past her at the moment. He saw what was happening and came to help.

Together they saw that there was a fire burning on the dashcam and the area around it. The explosion broke the windshield and burned the front seats along with the car console and the front doors. The security officer put out the fire for her just in time before the fire spread to other areas of the truck.

The girlfriend was shocked but she also felt relieved because the dashcam could have exploded when someone was driving or sitting in the car. If that was the case, then someone would have been injured from the explosion, not including emotional damage that could have been much worse. A states that he simply shared the story as a warning, not to blame someone or a company. He also doesn’t want to share the location where the incident happened or the brand of the dashcam.

  • Child almost loses his foot to escalator.

A father came out to warn netizens online to be extremely careful if you or your child use the escalator when wearing rubber shoes. There have been recent cases in Thailand with people getting their shoes sucked in by the escalator, normally this is caused by rubber shoes. Rubber shoes such as crocs are flexible, the escalator can accidentally trap the shoe then suck it in underneath. This latest incident is a great example of why you should be extremely careful when wearing rubber shoes on the escalator.

A Facebook user “Puripat Timpu” shared the story on how his son almost lost one of his feet to the escalator. Luckily, his son pulled his foot out in time before any toes were sucked into the escalator. The child had some injuries, but it was nothing compared to what would’ve happened if he didn’t leave the shoe behind.

When using the escalator with rubber shoes on, do not stand close to the side of the escalator and also beware of your step getting on and off the escalator. Abc News published an article that revealed many parents were in this same situation. This can happen to adults, but because rubber shoes are popular among children for the colorful and comfy feel, adding to the fact that children don’t realize the risk of rubber shoes and escalators. A popular activity that children do while using the escalator is to run their shoes alongside the elevator as it moves up or down.

     Credit: Sanook
    Credit: Sanook

Rubber shoes include crocs, flip flops, or any shoes with a soft footbed that can pose as a risk. The US Consumer Product Safety Commission revealed that approximately 10,000 people meet emergency circumstances each year from accidents on the escalator, and this is just in the US alone. From the total number, about 2,000 end up getting their feet or hands sucked into the escalator. It is definitely not an idea

In this case, the shoe left behind had been torn in the front, where the toes were. The dad rushed his son to the hospital where the child is now safe and on the path of a good recovery. If this does happen to you, then the first thing to do is to remove you or your child’s foot from the shoe, tell another person to press the red emergency button normally on top of the escalator. This will stop the escalator, hopefully in time before anything bad happens.

  • Police arrests couple after cancer patient dies from homemade CBD oil.

The Chiang Mai Police arrested a husband and wife selling homemade CBD oil through the online market after receiving a complaint that a cancer patient died after using the oil. Officials found 3.4 Million THB cash in the suspect’s house.

The Chiang Mai Police entered the house with a search warrant issued by the Chiang Mai Provincial Court. Officials received information that CBD oil was being made inside the house by the residents and then selling the oil online. Inside was Nipon 34 years old and Wichunee 31 years old, the husband and wife. The police found evidence of CBD oil including oil that was already packaged in small bottles. There were also at least 30 boxes already packed ready to be shipped by post service.

The police also found savings account bank books, land title deeds, car documents, and a total of 3.4 Million THB in cash. Officials have seized all evidence awaiting to be checked in the prosecution process.

At the beginning of this month (September 2019) the police received a complaint that a 39-year-old woman with cancer had ordered some CBD oil from Wichunee, the wife. In a short period of time since taking the CBD oil, the woman died. The doctor told relatives the death was caused by an infected glottis. The relatives believed the condition is related to the use of CBD oil.

Officials investigated the issue and found out information on the house. They were sure that homemade CBD oil was produced and sold online by the home residents. Evidence was found in the investigation that the marijuana was ordered in from a neighboring country. Furthermore, the couple has been selling their products online for over 2 years. The police requested the court to issue them a search warrant based on the evidence discovered.

Wichunee stated that she graduated with a BBA Degree and started selling fruit packages that could repel insects along with some agriculture equipment. She started selling CBD oil because she personally used it and felt that the oil was a success. She started testing it to cancer patients she knew and results were good. This is when she decided to order CBD oil from Laos. She mixed the oil and sold it at 1,000 THB per bottle.

The business started to get better and she started ordering marijuana from a neighboring country and made her own CBD oil at home. She told the police that one of her customers was informed by the doctors that he had 2 months to live but it has been almost 2 years since he started using her CBD oil. Wichunee insists that the 3.4 Million THB cash has nothing to do with the CBD oil business and that it all came from her agriculture business.

While the taxi was driving on the tollway, the driver started talking to someone on the phone criticizing LGBT persons. The taxi started off by saying that it’s weird how some girls want to become a boy, but nothing is as disgusting as a boy wanting to become a girl. This is when the victim asked the taxi driver how being defined as any of those terms affect him.

The question ignited a heated argument. When they started getting close to Soi Charoen Rat 7 the victim told the taxi to park in front of a busy restaurant. Instead of doing so, the taxi drove 1 kilometer away and parked in a quiet area. The victim decided not to leave the car and asked to be delivered at a police station.

The driver went to get a metal pole out from the trunk of the car. He tried to hit the head of one girl when the other tried to stop him. None of the cars passing helped stop the taxi driver, but finally, a motorbike driver came and helped the girls. The taxi driver drove away.

The police are searching through the security footage in the area including the tollway footage. They have also sent the license information to the Department of Land Transportation.
