Texas Congressman Blames Rap Music and Games for Elementary School Shooting

The debate over stricter gun laws has flared up again in the United States after the country was rocked by a shooting at an elementary school in the Texas village of Uvalde. However, according to Texas congressman Ronny Jackson, the shooting has nothing to do with America’s lenient gun laws. He states that rap music and video games are the culprits, among other things.

In an interview with Fox News, Jackson calls the shooting “incredibly malicious” and asks himself how it could have happened. “I grew up in a small town in western Texas, not much smaller than Uvalde. As a kid I never imagined that something like this could happen. When I was little things were different. The focus was on family, the community and the church. Everyone knew each other.”

According to Jackson, the focus on family and religion has declined sharply in recent years. “I’m not saying no one in Uvalde knows each other, but these are things that have been taken from us. Our culture has changed over the past 30 or 40 years.” Also, according to the congressman, children today are much more exposed to terrible things. “I’m thinking mostly about the horrible things kids hear in rap music at a young age and the horrific violence they see in games. It’s just not good for kids to have access to everything on the internet.”

It’s not the first time rap and games have been criticized for a mass shooting. For example, after two mass shootings in Texas and Ohio, former President Donald Trump indicated in 2019 that violence in games had to be tackled. However, numerous studies have shown that there is no connection between violence in the virtual world and in reality.
