Thai government changes its position on the Sinovac vaccine, from now on the AstraZeneca will be used

The Thai Ministry of Health has decided to administer AstraZeneca’s Covid-19 vaccine as a second dose to those who received a Sinovac shot before their first injection, in what is seen as a significant shift in the government vaccination policy.

The AstraZeneca shot will be administered three to four weeks after the first Sinovac injection, Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul said yesterday afternoon, adding that a combination of the vaccines will provide greater immunity against the Delta variant of the vaccine. coronavirus.

That said, Mr Anutin did not explain what those who have had two injections of the Sinovac vaccine should do once the policy change goes into effect, or how it would affect people waiting for their first or second dose of the AstraZeneca vaccine.

The change was announced after the National Communicable Diseases Committee convened a meeting to discuss measures to address the rapid spread of the Delta strain, which was first discovered in India and is quickly becoming the dominant strain in Thailand.

A source at the health ministry said that from now on a combination of the vaccines will be administered in the national vaccination campaign.

“We will no longer administer Sinovac shots as the first, second, or booster injection. According to research, an injection of Sinovac followed by an AstraZeneca injection can trigger an immune response almost equivalent to two injections of AstraZeneca’s,” the source said.
