A Thai man has helped a 10-year-old Chinese-American girl who was trudging alone on a road in Chonburi in an attempt to reach Bangkok to reunite with her mother.

The 23-year-old man, identified as Poommiphat Chaichana, told local media that he saw the girl walking alone on a dimly lit road in Chonburi’s Nong Yai district.

“The girl was only carrying a backpack and was walking on a busy road, which worried me, so I decided to stop and ask if she was lost,” Poomiphat told local media.

He tried in vain to communicate with the girl as he spoke only Thai and the girl only English. He then called the police and his employer to communicate with her and eventually learned that the girl was on her way to Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport to catch a flight to China to reunite with her mother.

The girl was then taken by the tourist police to the Nongprue Police Station and picked up in the morning by her American father. “She was very smart because she had a paper map and could read signs that actually led to Bangkok,” Poommiphat said.
