A man in Bangkok was arrested on a charge of rape after 36 women reported to the police, claiming that the man was posing as a model scout to hire them for a job as a model but threatened to kill them at the first meeting to have sex.
The victims say 39-year-old Denphum Wattanachotpinyo posed as a model scout and said he could connect them for jobs as hostesses serving drinks at private parties.
Some Thai models are known as “pretties” often work as hostesses at private parties, but often involve sex, drugs and excessive drinking. It is work that Thai society looks down on, therefore women are less likely to report abuse.
The dangers many “beautiful pretties” face have recently come to light after the deaths of two of them. In 2019, a 25-year-old model died of ‘extreme alcohol poisoning’. Her body was found dead in the lobby of an apartment building in Bangkok. Another model died 2 months ago after working as a hostess at a private party in Bangkok.
Bangkok police have arrested Denphum Wattanachotpinyo, who is from Nonthaburi, a suburb outside the capital. Police say Denphum Wattanachotpinyo told women he was a modelling agent and said he wanted to meet in person before getting them the coveted job.
Victims say Denphum used a knife to threaten them, told them to use drugs and then raped them. They say he videotaped the sex acts and used them as blackmail. Some victims say Denphum stole them too.
Denphum was wanted on the basis of 3 arrest warrants issued by the Criminal Court and Thon Buri Criminal Court. He is accused of rape, threats to harm, depriving others of their liberty, threatening and intimidating others, and theft. Police say Denphum has denied the charges, claiming there was mutual consent.
