Thai monk in northeast Thailand accused of dressing up as a woman for a night out

A young monk in northeastern Thailand had apparently dressed up as a woman for a night out.

Photos of the monk dressed in his orange robes were shared on Facebook, along with photos of who appears to be the same person, but dressed as a woman.

Soon Thai social media was in turmoil and complaints were filed with the local Buddhism office. If things go wrong, the young monk can be laicized.

A Thai blogger noticed the monk’s photos and posted them on his own Facebook page. The man turns out to have dressed up as a woman to go out in the evening for drinks and parties.

The abbot of Wat Yodkaew in Nong Khai, which borders Laos, confirmed that the man is a monk at the temple, but was unaware that the monk left the temple grounds at night dressed as a woman. The abbot says the temple is conducting an investigation to determine what action to take.

After the photos were posted, complaints were sent to the Bureau of Buddhism calling on the monk to be stripped of his title.

The director of the Bureau of Buddhism in Nong Khai has also said that the monk’s actions could damage the reputation of the religious institution.

Thailand’s Sangha Supreme Council, the governing body of the country’s Buddhist order, has authorized the temple’s abbot to investigate and impose appropriate punishment.
