Thai doctors have expressed concern about the condition of a reporter who was bitten by “Godzilla,” an obese macaque who became an Internet star after being taken from its owner by Thai authorities last week.

The monkey was kept by its owner at a market in Bangkok’s Minburi neighborhood, where it exploded to over 20 kilograms in weight after being fed junk food by passers-by. An average adult macaque weighs only 10 pounds.

The Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation (DNP) decided last Thursday (March 25) to impound Godzilla from the owner, fearing the primate would die of obesity.

The day before (March 24), a PPTV reporter, Khun Natcha Norphong, visited the monkey’s owner’s home for a report. At first, Khun Natcha did not want to be touched by the monkey. After the owner reassured her that it was safe to get closer to the monkey, she felt more comfortable. She decided to approach Godzilla, for the wild animal this was reason enough to sink its teeth into the woman’s flesh. The bite cut to the bone, as it turned out.

Now doctors at Paolo Hospital Phaholyothin, where Natcha is being treated, are concerned about her condition. They report that her white blood cell count has dropped to 3,000 / ml from a normal level of 4,500-10,000 / ml and that she should keep her bed.

No virus was found in her blood, but doctors suspect Natcha may have contracted a bone infection. asked the DNP to check the monkey for viruses. There is no evidence that Godzilla was ever vaccinated.

Needless to say, a DNP vet pointed out that monkeys can carry rabies and tetanus.
