The Thai Navy Department yesterday filed a complaint asking police to take action against a Thai tourist who sat on an endangered coral reef.

Wutthipong Wongin, an official in the above-mentioned department responsible for the east coast, used a photo of Wisutr Rattanasathian on his Facebook account as evidence for the complaint.

Wisutr was pictured underwater on a coral reef off Koh Khram Noi near Sattahip.

Wutthipong said the man would be charged with endangering an endangered species, as the reef in the photo is under Thai law.

Wisutr could be fined up to 1 million baht or jailed for up to 10 years or a combination of both if found guilty.

Wisutr, 45, later met with police to be formally notified of the charges. He said he never intended to damage the reef.

The photo was taken last year and posted to his Facebook page on Saturday, he added.
