Hundreds of cars and as many motorcycles joined a crowd of protesters today as they marched from the democracy monument to the government building defying the ban on public gatherings as they shouted for the impeachment of Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha.

In the morning, Anti-government protesters led by the Free Youth Movement gathered at the monument on Ratchadamnoen Avenue.

The demonstrations started last year calling for the impeachment of the former junta leader and the restoration of democracy, but have recently added the government’s failure to tackle the coronavirus pandemic to their agenda.

Several fake body bags were brought to the memorial, symbolizing the government’s failure to contain the spread of the virus, which has resulted in 3,341 deaths since its outbreak early last year.

Motorists and motorcyclists honked their horns as organizers kicked off their march from the monument to the Prime Minister’s office.

The meeting came despite the government’s ban on gatherings of more than five people in Greater Bangkok in what it said was an effort to prevent the further spread of the virus. The lockdown in 10 provinces, including the capital, has been extended until August 2, while another three provinces are subject to the same restrictions on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, more than 2,000 police officers were deployed to counter the demonstration.

Police Major General, Piya Tawichai, the deputy. Metropolitan Police Bureau commander said a number of images of the prime minister had been removed from the monument to prevent protesters from setting them on fire outside the government building.
