Thailand has a points system in traffic, be careful, your points are deducted for every traffic violation
If you are moving around Thailand on your own means of transport, you may soon see points that have been removed from your license for a traffic violation.
The Ministry of Land Transport will introduce a system from December 1 to deduct points from driver’s licenses who violate traffic regulations and laws, the Director-General of the Ministry of Transport, Chirut Wisanchit, said.
The points taken are based on the seriousness of the offence and are divided into three groups: 10, 20 and 30 points. A driver’s license has 100 points.
A driver whose driver’s license score is reduced to zero will be banned from driving for 90 days. If the driver’s license is suspended more than twice in three years, the driver will be banned from driving for 180 days.
For example, if a driver commits the serious offence of carrying narcotics, or driving without regard for the safety of others, or is involved in causing a serious accident, his/her license will be revoked immediately and the points will be refunded to zero.
Those whose scores have been reduced may choose to attend training and take a driving test.
A 2-hour training helps the driver to recover 50 points, while a 4-hour training gives the driver 100 points back.
