Two women infected with a new variant of the virus arrived in Thailand before the official announcement of the WHO on the emergence of the omicron variant

In Thailand, the second and third cases of infection with the omicron variant of the coronavirus were detected in two unvaccinated women who returned to the country from Nigeria on November 24, the Covid-19 situation centre in Thailand said.

Upon arrival in the kingdom, both infected women were quarantined and tested positive for Covid-19, just two days before the World Health Organization officially announced the omicron variant.

Women contracted the new variant of the coronavirus before Thailand registered the first known case of the omicron variant – a 35-year-old American businessman who arrived in the country on November 29, the situation centre said.

The infected women were treated in a hospital where they were supposed to stay until December 5, but the authorities decided to make sure that the newly identified cases were not an omicron option. The doctors’ fears were confirmed, and the women tested positive for a new type of virus. Both carriers of the new version were left in the hospital under observation for another seven days.

The female Thai patients, 46 and 36 years old, are translators working for a Christian church. They were among three representatives from Thailand at the assembly held in Lagos, Nigeria from 13 to 23 November. The 36-year-old woman is reported to have had Covid-19 in July.

The third member of the group, also a Thai national who took part in the assembly, travelled to Sweden after a trip to Lagos and subsequently tested positive for coronavirus as well. It is noted that the PCR tests done on November 21 before flying to Thailand gave a negative result.

The “first” American to be infected with the new variant did not develop any serious symptoms. 16 of the 17 hotel employees who contacted him in Thailand tested negative for the coronavirus.
