Thailand has yet to vaccinate 11 of the country’s 70 million people

Of the more than 70 million people in Thailand, only about 11 million have not yet received Covid19 vaccination, Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul said yesterday.

“Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha has instructed the Department of Disease Control to find these people and have them vaccinated as soon as possible, ideally before December 15, to help achieve coveted herd immunity,” he said.

“This time frame is not difficult, as the current vaccination rate is about 700,000 to 800,000 doses per day. To reach 11 million people in 30 days, we need to reach just over 300,000 individuals per day on average.”

The minister said vaccination sites or available doses are not the only things that guarantee 100 per cent vaccination coverage. It also requires convincing those who are hesitant to get vaccinated.

“Public health volunteers are advised to go door-to-door to convince those who have not been vaccinated, especially the elderly who do not go outside and think they do not need to be vaccinated because they have little contact with outsiders. It is precisely these people who are most vulnerable because they can be infected by relatives.

“Convincing these people to get vaccinated is the only way to make everyone safe,” Anutin said

The minister said more than 86 million vaccinations have been administered since the vaccine was introduced in February, and the government will purchase at least 90 million doses next year to ensure everyone gets a booster shot.

“AstraZeneca will deliver 60 million doses next year, while Pfizer will deliver 30 million doses,” he said. “We will also have access to other types of vaccines, including the vaccine produced by Novavax and the vaccine being developed by the Government Pharmaceutical Organization.

“Achieving 100 per cent vaccination coverage is a huge milestone and will prove to the world community that Thailand has an efficient public health system and that the government is serious about looking after its citizens,” Anutin gibbered.
