Thailand is considering reintroducing mask-wearing in public areas

Thai Prime Minister Prayut has met in the government building with the administrative centre for Covid19 containment, the CCSA. The prime minister is also the chairman of Thailand’s Covid task force that has been overseeing ongoing policies since April 2020, when the country issued the emergency decree. The emergency decree will now remain in effect until the end of September.

As Thailand is currently experiencing a slight rise in Omicron BA.4 and BA.5 subvariant infections, the Department of Public Health has expressed concern over the decision made at the end of June to voluntarily wear masks in open areas. to make.

Thai Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul said he expected an increase in new infections over the next 10 weeks and claimed his ministry was not in favor of voluntary masks being worn.

Also, the head of the Faculty of Medicine at Siriraj Hospital advised the government “to reintroduce Covid-19 measures, including the obligation to wear face masks everywhere.

“The government has to reintroduce strict control measures, including wearing face masks indoors. This is urgent and we should not wait for all hospital beds to be occupied. BA.4 and BA.5 may not be as severe as the Delta variant, but they are more contagious and if the number of cases continues to increase, there is a chance that they will mutate further.”

The proposal is supported by several Thai doctors and medical associations. In reality, however, almost all Thai people, at least around Bangkok, do not refrain from wearing their masks in public.

The meeting discussed proposals from the Tourism Authority of Thailand to waive tourist visa fees for countries that are currently charged for visa-on-arrival services. Tourist authorities also recommend extending the length of stay on tourist visas – countries with stays from 15 days to 30 days, countries with stays from 30 days to 45 days.
