Thailand will allow tourists from 46 countries, including the Netherlands, without mandatory quarantine from November 1. Thai Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha announced this.

With this easing, the Southeast Asian country is trying to revive its languishing tourism industry. Before the pandemic, tourism, with 40 million foreign visitors a year, accounted for 12 per cent of the economy, but this year it is already very nice when 100,000 tourists come, according to the Thai tourism office.

Other Southeast Asian holiday countries such as Malaysia, Singapore and Vietnam are also abandoning their strict corona policy to let tourists in.

Thailand has registered a total of 1.8 million corona cases since the start of the pandemic, including 18,486 deaths. Most Thais have been infected in the past seven months: with 10,203 new covid infections per day, the peak is just starting to decrease.

Premium Prayut Chan-o-cha said he was aware that the acceleration carried the risk of more localized infections.

“But this is a risk we have to take. I think Thailand, like other countries, is now better equipped to deal with the risk. And we have to learn to live with it.”

The tourists from the 46 countries, described as the first low-risk group, will be allowed to enter Thailand by plane without quarantine, provided they are fully vaccinated and have evidence of negative pre-flight test results. They must also agree to take another test upon arrival.

Prime Minister Prayut added that in the meantime, the Ministry of Health would accelerate vaccinations on the ground. He urged people to adhere to prescribed Covid-19 health measures – wearing masks, cleaning hands regularly and observing social distancing.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs released the names of the 45 countries and a territory shortly after the Prime Minister’s announcement.

On October 11, the prime minister said that tourists from about 10 countries would be allowed to visit Thailand without quarantine from November 1 under the same conditions. According to the information at the time, they can visit 17 places. It is unclear whether the list still applies after the extended reopening. The 17 places are:

  • Phuket
  • Surat Thani
