Thailand opens new ‘sandboxes’ on islands from 11 January

Krabi, Phang-nga and Thailand’s three islands of Samui, Phangan and (Ko) Tao are ready to receive tourists under the ‘sandbox’ scheme from January 11

As Thailand’s Test&Go entry scheme without quarantine has been suspended indefinitely by the authorities, a meeting of the coronavirus situation group today approved a decision to increase the number of provinces available for foreign tourists under the sandbox programme.

Starting January 11, travellers will be able to register for entry into Thailand under the sandbox scheme in Krabi, Phangnga and three islands in Surat Thani province – which are Samui, Phangan and (Ko) Tao.

The Sandbox programme is open to fully vaccinated travellers. An RT-PCR test is required upon arrival in Thailand and accommodation must also be booked at a hotel or resort approved by the Safety and Health Authority. Tourists must stay for one week in a particular province or island, and then it is possible to move around the country in any direction.

Registration for entry into Thailand under the Sandpiper programme, with the exception of the Phuket Sandpiper, was suspended last month, along with the Test&Go programme. However, under pressure from tourism officials, the Covid-19 Situation Management Centre has approved additional destinations to receive travellers under the Sandbox programme.

As for “Test&Go” – this non-quarantine entry programme into Thailand is currently closed indefinitely. Tourists who have already received a “Thailand Pass” under this programme must arrive in Thailand by 15 January.
