Thailand police are increasingly taking action against street races

The Royal Thai Police (RTP) wants to change a law that classifies an illegal motorcycle race on the road as one consisting of five or more racers. Police want this changed to two or more racers.

The pl. National Police Chief General Damrongsak Kittiprapas said a draft amendment to the land transportation law is under examination by a Senate committee.

Police across the country will be notified of the change in due course so that it can be applied, General Damrongsak said.

The proposed change comes as police crackdown on illegal racing across the country, resulting in nearly 20,000 motorcycles being seized this month.

As part of the crackdown, police will monitor social media to check for street racing, he said, adding that schools are being investigated over the issue as 50% of racers are school-aged. People can inform the police about illegal races and receive a reward of 3,000 baht, General Damrongsak said.

Meanwhile, the Region Provincial Police (PPR) 3 has cracked down on illegal street racing in Chaiyaphum, Buriram, Yasothon, Sri Sa Ket, Surin, Amnat Charoen and Ubon Ratchathani.

The pl. PPR3 head Major General Promnattaket Hamkampai said his region had taken legal action against 2,851 people and seized 2,051 bicycles and 279 modified exhaust pipes.
