A World Trafficking in Human Beings Report (TIP) published by the US State Department stated that Thailand had climbed to Level 2.
The report pointed out that the economic and social distress caused by the Covid-19 pandemic is a key factor driving human trafficking in the world.
“A survey by the European Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights and UN Women highlights that nearly 70 per cent of trafficking survivors from 35 countries reported that their financial well-being was heavily impacted by the Covid19 virus and more than two-thirds described a decline in their mental health. health to government-imposed lockdowns that evoke memories of exploitative situations,” the document reads.
Foreign Ministry spokesman Thani Saengrat said the report was disappointing because it failed to reflect Thailand’s efforts to tackle human trafficking. He added that the government is monitoring this issue despite the ongoing crisis.
