The Thai government has announced that they are continuing plans to waive the current mandatory quarantine for vaccinated visitors to Bangkok and 5 other major tourist destinations from October this year in an effort to end the battered tourism industry of Bangkok. to revive the country.

Dr. CCSA’s Traisulee Traisoranakul says the new measures will provide easier access to key tourist sites such as Pattaya, Phang Nga, Koh Samui, Krabi and Bangkok from Oct. 1.

Phuket tourism and government officials also claim they are preparing to open up to vaccinated travellers within 7 weeks in the so-called “sandbox” project. The positive steps forward came at the same time as local officials announced a mandatory 14-day quarantine period for out-of-county visitors starting May 14, replacing the rapid antigen test.

The quarantine period would apply to all arrivals who were not fully vaccinated or who could give a negative PCR Covid test in the past 72 hours.

The ‘quarantine requirement’ is the most significant change to Thailand’s new reopening policy, but it remains to be seen what paperwork or current restrictions will remain in place – nothing has been announced yet. The questions of who will come or what remains open for them to enjoy when they arrive still remain.

Meanwhile, Tourism and Sports Minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn reiterated this week that the island should not have any new infections before a quarantine-free reopening could take place, adding to the earlier stipulation that 70% of the island’s population should be vaccinated. currently, only 22% of the population of Phuket has been vaccinated, but a new registration round will take place in the coming week.

Phuket is well ahead of the rest of Thailand at this stage in the number of vaccinations.
