Thailand has been in talks with the Chinese pharmaceutical company Sinovac Biotech to purchase an additional five million doses of CoronaVac, following delivery of 800,000 doses of the coronavirus vaccine last Saturday.
The country’s agreement with Sinovac had a delivery of two million vaccines. The first 200,000 arrived on February 24, and another 800,000 last Saturday. This will be followed by a million in April. Under the current government plan, AstraZeneca will be used for all of the country’s remaining vaccine needs this year.
In total, 26 million vaccines, produced by Siam Bioscience in Thailand, will be made available from June to August, with an additional 35 million from September to December.
According to official figures, 61,791 people had been vaccinated by last Thursday.
A Federation of Thai Industries (FTI) investigation found that 109 companies plan to vaccinate up to 51,000 workers once authorities approve private sector imports of the approved vaccines.
The FTI hopes vaccinations can start in June or earlier.
