The money savers in Thailand can rejoice, on March 24, the 20 baht banknote will receive a radical new update. No, the royal portrait is not being replaced by another prominent figure, but the thin, dirty paper that has been used for decades is being replaced by a modern new polymer.

From March 24, the new, more durable 20 baht polymer bills will begin to circulate and become legal currency, available at all financial institutions and commercial banks across the country. Anyone who wishes can take their old paper notes to these banks and exchange them for new polymer notes.

The Bank of Thailand has issued these new notes with polymer instead of paper, as they are cleaner and stronger than the old notes. They do not absorb dirt or moisture, which makes them cleaner, and because they are much more robust and durable, they do not need to be taken out of circulation and replaced as often as the paper ones, making them more environmentally friendly.

Polymer notes like this new 20 baht note are already in use in many other countries, including Thailand’s neighbor to the south of Malaysia and Singapore below. Vietnam also uses polymer bills, as do Australia, the UK, and Canada.

The design of the new polymer 20 baht bill will not differ much from the current paper bill in circulation, but they will have a neat little transparent window in it, as well as incorporating the number 20 embossed into the new version for extra security. .
