Thailand’s capital cancels its official New Year’s Eve event and accompanying prayer ceremonies

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) has decided to cancel the official New Year’s event and prayer ceremony planned in Lan Khon Meaung city square as well as 50 district offices on the night of December 31 to January 1 due to concerns about the Omicron covid19 variant.

the pl. Bangkok Governor Kriangyos Sudlabha said the meeting of the subcommittee of the Administrative Center for Covid19 Control, the CCSA, has asked the BMA to cancel all its New Year-related activities across the city.

The cancellation, he added, is in line with the World Health Organization’s call to cancel New Year’s Eve celebrations worldwide.

However, Kriangyos said activities organized by the private sector such as the countdown events at Central World and Icon Siam malls, which have already been approved by the BMA, will depend on their management for a decision as to whether or not Get on.

He said that if the celebrations in the malls continue, the BMA will seek their cooperation to limit the number of attendees and improve safety measures to reduce the risk of COVID-19 infection.
