The Covid virus causes Thailand’s longest wooden bridge to be closed to traffic

Saphan Mon Bridge in Sangkhla Buri District of Kanchanaburi Province will be closed to visitors this morning after an outbreak of the Covid19 Virus in Ban Wang Ka village on the other side of Songklia River.

The Western Province’s Communicable Diseases Committee has closed the country’s longest wooden bridge, popularly known as Saphan Mon, to isolate the village as the virus is infecting many people there.

The Sangkhla Buri district office has used shadow nets to block access to the 445-meter-long Saphan Mon, officially the Uttamanusorn Bridge, effectively quarantining people in Ban Wang Ka village across the Songkalia River. About 8,000 people live in the village.

The district chief of Sangkhla Buri, Pakorn Kanwanlee, ordered the construction of a community isolation centre at Wat Wang Wiwekaram. Infected people are being quarantined there pending confirmation by other tests.

Only people who have to leave the village for medical treatment for other essential reasons and local officials are allowed to cross the 36-year-old bridge.

Suppliers must unload deliveries at a checkpoint near the bridge. Workers then disinfect the goods before taking them to the village.
