The devastating consequences of the Covid19 pandemic kills the Thai “Tuk-Tuks” in Bangkok

Must read

The coronavirus outbreak has delivered the fatal blow to tuk-tuk drivers. Barely after recovering from the absence of foreign tourists, the third wave of the pandemic began last month. Fortunately, the tuk-tuk drivers are supported by local ex-pats and Thai people.

When passengers are nowhere to be seen, they drive around with advertising banners on their vehicles.

Thitipong Lohaendung, a veterinary student at Kasetsart University, said his father ran a tuk-tuk garage for more than 10 years, but drivers were unable to generate income after the country was trapped in the first wave of the pandemic last year. Thitipong and his friends decided to form “Tuk Up” to offer new services through Tuk-Tuks.

“We let our drivers use tuk-tuks for free and give them 50 baht each for petrol. Last year, student demonstrators ran a lot of campaigns about our tuk-tuks because it is cheaper to advertise with the tuk-home. and advertising in shopping centres

Since then, Tuk-Tuks provide advertising services to international and local businesses. About 300 tuk-tuks have signed contracts with Tuk Up. There are currently more than 10 events per month. Amanda Obdam, for example, takes part in the 69th Miss Universe Pageant in the United States. The fans asked more than 50 tuk-tuks to support them on April 27.

The customers can choose locations and types of banners. Tuk-tuks are common in Bangkok’s business areas such as Siam Square, Saladaeng, Sukhumvit, Hua Lamphong, and Yaowarat. While the back banner costs 1,000 baht per month, the side banner costs 500 baht. Prices are lower if customers bring their own banners.

Thitipong said advertising services were the main source of income during the third wave of the pandemic.

“We are now bringing a poster of Krit ‘PP’ Amnuaydechkorn. The fans love it. The drivers receive about 1,000 baht per month. That means a lot to them, ”he added.
