A Thai woman has told police that she set her own house in Panat Nikhom on fire earlier this week, she said she did so to prevent thieves from stealing her inside the house.

Panat Nikhom police were notified earlier this week just after sunset of the fire at a house near a temple in Hua Tanot sub-district.

Police and firefighters pulled out with several fire engines and found the two-story wooden house ablaze. It took about half an hour for firefighters to control the fire. The owner calmly and unharmed waited for the police nearby, despite the fact that her house was completely in ashes.

Khun Kittiphon Pradaprueng, 77, told Panat Nikhom police: “I live alone in the house and was relaxing when a thief tried to break into my house. To scare the thief, I turned on my gas stove and lit a fire with various materials in my house. “

“I just wanted to show the would-be thieves that no one can steal from me and despite being older, I am not an easy target. After a short, while I thought the thieves had fled, wanted to extinguish the fire with water, but it was too late because the flames had spread through the wooden house. I ran out of the house and called police and firefighters for help. Kittiphon concluded, claiming that she just wanted to scare the thief and had no intention of setting fire to her entire home.

Panat Nikhom police did not immediately find evidence of theft or anything in that direction but did not state whether they confirmed or denied Kittiphon’s statements.

The woman has been taken to a local police station, according to a Panat Nikhom police spokesperson who spoke to the local press about the incident, the woman will face legal action even if she has set her own home on fire.
