After only one day of opening, the skywalk over the River Kwai is already closed. It seems that having a glass bottom allows for spectacular views, but also requires special shoes not to damage the bridge, and these were not sufficiently available. All visitors are required to purchase and wear these special shoes when walking the skywalk.

Kanchanaburi Municipality apologized for closing just one day after opening. They promise to replenish their stock of the special shoes that visitors have to buy for 60 baht and take home as souvenirs. They plan to reopen the new skywalk next Thursday.

The “Bridge Over The River Kwai” has been a critically acclaimed book and film since the 1950s, a few days ago the Thai government opened a new bridge – the Kanchana Buri skywalk over the Khwae Yai River. The skywalk opened ahead of schedule, along with an adjacent pedestrian promenade, one open activity space and a public park in Muang District on Thailand’s western edge.

The skywalk covers a 150-meter stretch that offers panoramic vistas overlooking the confluence of the Mae Klong, Khwae Noi and Khwae Yai – three rivers that converge at that point. Kanchana Buri hopes to increase their tourist numbers by elevating their tourists with the 12-meter-high skywalk. They are also happy to provide recreation space for the locals in the area. Originally, the opening was planned for early 2023.

While the 12-meter skywalk will be a tourist attraction in its own right, the bridge is part of a planned overall beautification of the area, with the cabinet approving further projects to add landscaping to the nearby Khun Phaen pier and riverbanks. in between. .

The Kanchanaburi Municipality plans to beautify and develop the Old Town on both sides of the river. The Skywalk offers beautiful views of the city, but it is made of glass so that those walking past can look directly down into the confluence of water with two colours meeting and combining.

Last Saturday, the opening ceremony for the skywalk was organized by the governor of Kanchana Buri.

There is a limit of 100 to 120 tourists being allowed on the bridge at a time, and access is granted in one-hour blocks from 9 am to 6 pm each day. The first block is from 9 am to 10 am and the last from 5 pm to 6 pm. On weekdays, there is a 3-hour break from 12 noon to 3 p.m., with 6 sessions per day, for up to 720 people per day. There is no intermission on weekends and holidays, allowing groups to visit the skywalk 9 hours per hour, up to 1,080 people per weekend day.
