The opposition criticizes the Thai government’s corona policy

The Covid19 situation is high on the agenda this week when the new parliamentary session starts. This includes a further loan of 500 billion baht to stimulate the economy.

The opposition parties want to sharply criticize the government for the country’s high debt. During the first pandemic outbreak last year, the government had taken out baht 1 trillion loans by decree to help combat the economic and social consequences of the corona crisis.

The opposition has asked the government to cut the Ministry of Defense’s budget of 203 billion baht for next year and use the money to fight the pandemic.

The first reading of the 3.1 trillion baht draft budget for the 2022 financial year is scheduled in parliament on May 31 and June 2. It represents a reduction in expenses of about 5.6 per cent over the current fiscal year.

The leading opposition party, Pheu Thai, wants to vote against the draft budget because the spending therein is insufficient to combat the ongoing virus crisis.

Apparently, the opposition is pursuing a debate of mistrust because the government has failed to fight the pandemic and the economic recovery, while on the other hand has provided money for non-essentials.

The main target is the Ministry of Defense, which in the 2022 budget has received 50 billion baht more than the Ministry of Health. The opposition is calling on the ruling coalition parties to join the government and reject the budget, forcing Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha to resign or dissolve parliament because he cannot continue to rule without a legitimate budget.
