It turns out the orange dot is just an indicator light that turns on every time an app is using your iPhones microphone …. If you’re a person like me and you use voice memos or you just simply want to ask Siri a question, then the orange light will turn on.

You may also have seen a green light come on when you are using your phone. this dot will appear every time an app on your phone is using your iPhone’s camera.

Green dot means an iOS app is currently using the camera.
Green dot means an iOS app is currently using the camera.

So for example when you open up your camera to take a photo or you face time or you answer a call in face time the greenlight will, in fact, turn on.

But, Both the orange and green lights will never appear at the same time.

So if your recording a video on your iPhone which accesses both its camera and microphone then only the green light will appear.

Apple have assured us that both of these features are only designed to protect your privacy and nothing more.

So for example,  if you see that the orange light is on but the app you are using has not asked permission, then you should be suspicious… someone’s listening to you
