An important bill to amend the traffic law to improve public safety could be passed in time for enforcement in July, a member of the House Committee on Transport said yesterday afternoon.

Chart Thai Pattana party chairman Nikorn Chamnong spoke to reporters after a committee meeting in the parliament building.

The panel led to a meeting on pedestrian safety on zebra crossings after female doctor Waralak Supawat-Jariyakul was killed in a motorbike crash on a zebra crossing in the capital last week from a speeding motorbike.

The panel invited representatives of the Committee for the Prevention and Reduction of Road Accidents, the Department of Land Transport, the National Police and the BMA to the meeting.

President Nikorn said the House of Representatives had introduced a bill long before the tragic accident to increase public safety on the roads.

The bill seeks a separate license for large motorcyclists and will increase the current fine from 1,000 baht to 4,000 baht for traffic violators, Nikorn said.

He said the bill is pending discussion by the Senate, which will review it on Jan. 31. Once the bill is approved, it will be sent back to the House of Representatives for reconfirmation if significant changes are made and the bill will then be sent for royal order and enacted, Nikorn said.

He said the panel proposed that on-demand traffic lights be added to all zebra crossings so that pedestrians can turn on the traffic light to stop motorists.

“It’s not right to let pedestrians run across the crosswalk and risk their lives,” Nikorn noted.

He said his party does not want the doctor’s death to have been in vain, so the panel proposals are summarized and later sent to the relevant government agencies for implementation.
