Things are going badly again in the deep South of Thailand, arson and bomb attacks in many places

Several insurgent groups have carried out coordinated bombings and arson attacks on convenience stores and gas stations in 11 locations in three southern border provinces, causing significant damage. 

The attacks in Yala, Narathiwat and Pattani started late last night and continued until this Wednesday morning. Three people are said to have been injured.

In Yala Province, a bomb exploded at a 7-Eleven store near a PTT gas station in Yaha District. Captain Sarayut Kochawong, a detective at Yala Police Station, said a man wearing a mask and Muslim women’s clothing entered the store and put a black bag on the counter. He told staff and customers to leave the store if they didn’t want to die.

They all fled the store. About 10 minutes later, a bomb in the bag went off. The explosion caused some damage to the store, but no casualties.

In Bannang Sata district, around midnight, four men on two motorcycles drove past a 7-Eleven store and threw a firebomb at the store, in Moo 2 village in Bannang Sata tambon. The fire caused little damage.

Around the same time, a bomb went off at a Mini Big C store in Moo 2 of Tambon Kayu Boko, Raman district, and another near a cell phone signal tower in Moo 1 village. The two bombs also caused minor damage. .

Also in Yala, a bomb went off at a 7-Eleven store at Moo 4 in tambon Po Seng in Muang district. A subsequent fire caused little damage to the store.

In neighboring Narathiwat province, a fire broke out at a 7-Eleven store at the PTT gas station at Moo 4 in Tambon Bacho, Bacho district, around 12:45 p.m. The store was badly damaged. A Myanmar delivery man at the store was injured and admitted to Bacho Hospital.

In Si Sakhon District, a fire caused extensive damage to a 7-Elevan store at a PTT gas station in Si Sakhon Municipality. A 14-year-old boy, Abukori Kadir, burned both legs and a woman, Wilaiwan Kaewsuk, suffered from chest pain.

In the Sungai Kolok district, a 7-Eleven store was located near a PTT gas station in Tambon Pasemat municipality. The fire spread to two fuel pumps, but was quickly extinguished. The store was badly damaged.

Arsonists also struck a 7-Eleven store and a Mini Big C store in Moo 1 village in Narathiwat’s Cho Airong district, causing damage.

In Pattani Province, around 12:20 a.m., a bomb exploded, followed by a fire, at the Bang Chak gas station in Moo 8 village in the Bo Thong tambon Bo Thong district of Nong Chik district on the Hat Yai-bound side of Highway 43. The fire skipped to a Mini Big C store in the gas station, dealing heavy damage. Three fire trucks arrived on the scene. They had the fire under control within two hours. An oil truck and two trailer trucks parked at the gas station also caught fire and suffered extensive damage.

About 30 minutes after midnight, a fire wreaked havoc at a Mini Big C store in Moo 5 village in Tambon Nam Dam in Thung Yang Daeng district. Police were investigating the attacks, which they say were clearly coordinated.
