Today is World Cancer Day, a day that we take a moment to reflect on the loss of a family member, a friend or an acquaintance, Thailand also participates by commemorating on this day (with a mourning edge) local celebrities who unfortunately succumbed to illness and were missed by many.

The local media plays an important role in raising cancer awareness and encouraging Thai citizens to adopt hygienic and personal health practices that can reduce the risk of cancer.

World Cancer Day is led by the Union for International Cancer Control in support of the goals of the World Cancer Declaration, written in 2008.

Among local celebrities, actor Saranyoo Wongkrachang and singer Ronnachai “Od” Thomyapariwat both succumbed to cancer last year. The other cancer victims were comedian Phaithoon Pumrat, better known by his stage name “The Smoky Robert”, and veteran television host Somchai Preprapafhong (“Sena Coke”).
