The 6-year-old boy who shot his teacher in Virginia last week brought his mother’s firearm to school. The Washington Post reports this after a police press conference.

According to the police, the mother of the toddler obtained the firearm legally. For the time being, it seems that the boy secretly brought the weapon to school.

Police also released more details about the shooting incident itself. For example, the boy would have deliberately shot his teacher after an altercation. He fired one shot, hitting Abigail “Abby” Zwerner, as the teacher is called, in the hand and upper chest. She then made sure that all the children in the class were safe before calling for help for herself.

Eyewitnesses report to The New York Times that Zwerner passed out outside the building after she asked bystanders to call the police. The school then went into lockdown after which the 6-year-old was arrested. The boy is now in the hospital where psychological tests are being carried out.

The management of Richneck Elementary School has decided that the school will remain closed for at least the rest of the week. The school wants to give students and their families the chance to recover from the incident. The investigation into the cause of the shooting is still ongoing.

According to The New York Times, it is rare for the perpetrator of a school shooting to be so young. From a database that keeps track of all school shootings in the US, it can be concluded that since 1970 there have been 16 shooters under the age of ten. It would only have happened three times before the shooter was just six years old. Two out of three incidents with a six-year-old also turned out to be an accident.
