The Ukrainian ambassador to Thailand was found dead yesterday on the holiday island of Koh Lipe, where he was on vacation with his son.

That is reported by the police. The cause of his death is not yet known.

The 45-year-old diplomat Andrii Besjta was appointed Ukraine’s ambassador to Thailand in 2016. According to the national police, he was found dead in his hotel room on Koh Lipe at 5:30 am local time. That island is popular with travellers for its crystal blue waters.

“The preliminary investigation has not revealed any sign of attack, robbery or violence,” said Kissana Phathanacharoen, deputy spokesman for the national police.

A medical team arrived and examined the body. Authorities questioned the ambassador’s son, Ostap, who shared the room with him. According to the son, his father went to sleep around 11 p.m. but woke up around 4:30 in the morning, vomited and then lost consciousness, Phathanacharoen said. Other witnesses have also been questioned.

Besjta’s body was first taken to a local hospital for an autopsy and then to a police hospital in Bangkok for a more thorough examination.

Beshta spent more than ten years of his career in Thailand.
