Today a sonar scanner was used to track a tug that capsized yesterday, the vessel must be somewhere in the deep muddy Chao Phraya River, but where, is still a mystery. The crew, consisting of the captain and his wife, died in this tragic incident, and they are also still being sought.
The boat capsized while manoeuvring in the fast-flowing water about 20 meters deep, it had five loaded barges hanging behind it. The incident occurred at a pier in Nakhon Luang district of Ayutthaya province.
Representatives of the Marine Department, the Navy and the Ayutthaya Naval Office prepared a search plan that used underwater sonar to locate the sunken tug.
Phitsanu Seetapan, head of the Marine Department’s underwater operations, said the tug’s descent was at least 20 meters deep. The very strong current could have wiped the two missing crew from the boat, or they could still be trapped inside the boat, he said.
Divers have now also been called in to help with this difficult search.
The 50-year-old tugboat driver Somchai Tharnkul and his wife Naruemol Tharnkul have not been seen since their tugboat disappeared into the depths of the Chao Phraya River opposite Wat Phanan Choeng Voraviharn.
The tug pulled five cargo barges to a pier in Nakhon Luang district of the central province. It overturned as the tow rope pulled the stern underwater and then sank at 11:15 a.m. in the strong current at the confluence of the rain-swollen Chao Phraya and Pasak River.
