The famous Walking Street in Pattaya will lose all wires and get a roof – the resort town is preparing to welcome tourists

The renovation of Pattaya’s famous Walking Street is 80 per cent complete, the resort town’s mayor Sontaya Khunpluem said. The project aims to clean up the red light district and attract tourists of all ages, Pattaya News reported.

To make the street look more beautiful and orderly, overhead electrical and communication wires have been moved underground, the mayor told local media. Business owners and artists will be encouraged to paint and decorate the footpaths and the road itself in the Walking Street area to give it an iconic look.

In addition, the street was often flooded during the rainy season, so rainwater drainage is being improved.

Pattaya authorities want the street to attract visitors both day and night. Officials are designing a retractable roof that will cover the street, allowing people to visit at any time of day, in any weather, and during the rainy season. Construction of the retractable roof over Walking Street is expected to begin in 2023.

Sontaya said rumours of the street being demolished are untrue, Walking Street is under construction and redevelopment. According to the mayor, business owners in Pattaya are confident that their businesses on the famous pedestrian street in the resort town will be restored once Covid-19 restrictions are lifted.
