Williams confirms: ‘Red Bull Thailand will continue to sponsor Albon in 2022’

Alexander Albon will simply be sponsored by Red Bull Thailand in 2022, confirms Jost Capito. The Williams team boss does emphasize that there will be no connection between Red Bull and Williams and that it is only a personal sponsorship.

Albon made his official Formula 1 debut with the Toro Rosso team in 2019 and was allowed to join the Red Bull Racing team halfway through the season. Unfortunately, like predecessor Pierre Gasly, Albon proved unable to keep up with teammate Max Verstappen’s pace and was replaced by Sergio Pérez in 2021. As a result, Albon was placed on the bench, where he will settle for the role of test and reserve driver for AlphaTauri and Red Bull Racing and a year in the DTM. The Thai Briton will return to the grid with the Williams team in 2022.

“We are not talking about contract details, he is a Williams driver without a Red Bull contract,” Capito told Motorsport-Total. Although Red Bull Racing has officially cancelled the contract from the end of this season, in order to facilitate the switch to Williams, the team has emphasized that there are still options for the future.
Red Bull ThailandCapito states that Albon has a private sponsorship contract with the Thai branch of the energy drink manufacturer, but that there is no relationship between Red Bull and Williams. “Red Bull Thailand has been his sponsor throughout his career and he is entitled to a personal sponsor. Red Bull will therefore remain its sponsor. But there is no relationship between Red Bull and Williams.”

Officially, Albon’s contract with Red Bull runs until the end of December. “He still works for Red Bull, he does simulator work for them. His contract expires at the end of this year. So when we talk, it’s about personal stuff and nothing technical. We keep those things separate and that’s the way it should be.” Williams can officially call on Albon’s services from January, but hopes to be able to bring this forward so that he can join in December. “We will talk to Red Bull and see what we can do,” Capito said.
