Women Can’t Fly Without Male Relative: Officials Claim Taliban Order

Afghan women are no longer allowed to fly alone. The Taliban government has ordered airlines in the country not to allow women to fly unless accompanied by a male relative.

The rule applies to domestic and foreign flights. However, it is still unclear whether the rule also applies to foreign women. In any case, women have been deprived of several rights since the arrival of the Taliban. That while the Taliban had promised a more lenient policy than during their previous reign.

Last weekend it was already decided that women and men are not allowed to visit parks in the capital Kabul at the same time. On Sundays, Mondays and Tuesdays, the parks are exclusively open to women, the rest of the week for men.

Schools for Afghan girls were also closed last week by the Taliban. The schools had only just opened after being closed for seven months, but have been forced to close again until a plan is in place “in accordance with Islamic law and Afghan culture”, the local education ministry said.
